Maduruthala Ocimum sanctum

Common name -  Maduruthala

Botanical name - Ocimum sanctum

Family                    - Lamiaceae

Life cycle                - Annual 

Morphology             

  • Stem: Stem with a strong smell and purple flowers and has a sweet-camphoraceous fragrance
  • Leaves: Simple, smal l(2.5 cm- 4 cm long) oval in shape and oppositely arranged, pubescent present in the both surface
  • Flower: Dull purple; irregular, very small; densely arranged in the un-branched hairy raceme
  • Fruit: 

Propagation 

  • By seeds

Agriculture usage/ importance

  • Consists of aromatic compounds, which is used to control mosquitoes
  • Used in indigenous medicine

Control method 

  • Use of herbicides
    • Paraquat 1.1L in 550L water/ha
