Common name - Koora

Botanical name - Amaranthus viridis

Family          - Amaranthaceae

Life cycle - Annual

Morphology

  • Annual herb, 10-75 (100) cm tall
  • Stems rather slender, glabrous. Leaf axils without paired spines. 
  • Leaves glabrous; petioles up to 10 cm; lamina 2-7 x 1.5-5.5 cm. 
  • Flowers unisexual, green, in cymose clusters; clusters in paniculate spikes about 2.5-12 cm long and 2-5 mm wide
  • Capsule subglobose, 1.25-1.5 mm
  • Seeds black or brown, shining 1-1.25 mm

Propagation 

  • By seed

Agricultural usage/ importance 

  • A. viridis is quite to very common and can be a serious weed in virtually any crop
  • Used as a medicine

Control method 

  • Butachlor applied pre-emergence at 2.0 to 2.5 kg ha-1 gives excellent control. Post-emergence application of 2_4-D at 500 g/ha
