Biodynamic Planting Calendar

  • Biodynamic agriculture is based on two major things
    • The cosmic energy
    • The Earth
  • The planting calendar is about rhythms of cosmic solar, moon and earth
  • Understanding the rhythms of  cosmos is really important for Biodynamic agriculture to work
  • These are the rhythms that sustain all lives on earth
  • Using these rhythms for seed sowing and planting works best in organic agriculture
  • Planing the cultivation of crops based on these rhythms enhance the quality of crops as these rhythms improve the fertility of living soil
  • This agriculture system uses astrology to make the Biodynamic agriculture a success
  • Energy of the sun (cosmic energy) continuously streams toward the earth
  • In addition to that other planets are also stream energy. i.e - Moon is an important planet which influence the plant growth, fertility, water uptake and water movement inside the plant

The Planting Calendar

  • This calendar shows the six important rhythmic cycles in each month
  • These six rhythms indicate important dates for farming

The Six Moon Rhythms

  1. Full-new moon
  2. Moon opposite Saturn
  3. Ascending-descending moon
  4. Moon nodes
  5. Perigee-Apogee
  6. Moon in zodiac constellations
Full Moon Influence

  • The full moon mostly affect the water element
  • 48 hours prior to the full moon moisture level of earth increases clearly
  • In this period;
    • Seeds germinate comparatively quickly and plants grow faster
    • Cell division tends to be faster than other times
    • Growth of fungus on plants increases
    • Increase in insect activity
    • More activity underneath the soil

Moon Opposite Saturn

  • During this time period plants and soil are under the influence of moon and Saturn
    • Moon influence enhance the calcium processes which are connected to propagation and growth of plants
    • Saturn influence enhance the silica processes which are connected to growth of root, leaf and fruit

Ascending-Descending Moon

  • Ascending moon is when moon gets higher in the sky in an arc from East to West everyday
  • When the moon gets lower everyday, it is the descending moon

Moon Nodes

  • Ascending and descending moon crosses the path of the sun: These crossing points are know as Nodes
  • As the moon negate the influence of the sun during the node days, Biodynamic farmers do not do any agricultural work such as seeding, pruning and etc

Perigee - Apogee

  • The Moon orbits around earth in an eclipse
  • The moons's nearest point to the earth on this eclipse is the Perigee
  • The farthest point is the Apogee
  • At Perigee moon influences the earth's moisture to increases
  • Apogee appears to be good time to plant potatoes, as the quantity of potatoes increase but, at Perigee quantity decreases (Potato size increases )

Moon in Zodiac Constellation

The influences of the constellations are passed on, reflected by the Moon, through the 4 classical elements of nature - warmth/fire, light/air, water and earth in the following groupings
